Cultural competency & humility with South Asian Clients

Course Summary

This training is an introduction to cultural competency and trauma-sensitive approaches to understanding human behavior and change in South Asian communities. This training clarifies concepts and nuances of cultural/spiritual practices that impact behavior, change, perceptions of mental health and help-seeking behaviors that intersect with South Asian cultural norms. A description of historical systems, cultural values conflict, acculturation patterns and intergenerational trauma and review theories of assimilation & acculturation  will be discussed. Participants will strengthen their cultural humility, cultural competency and trauma informed approaches apply apply it to assessment and treatment. Cultural competent and trauma sensitive approaches to interventions will be discussed to strengthen trust, alliance between therapist and client.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


1. Explain the value of cultural humility, clarifying cultural concepts and beliefs that impact behavior, change and healing in the South Asian communities.
 
2. Describe the framework of becoming a multiculturally competent therapist and the predictors of a strong working alliance between therapist and client.

 
3. Apply theories of assimilation and acculturation to assess and treat South Asian clients.

 
4. Explore the impact of intergenerational trauma on perceptions of behavior, relationships, change and healing in South Asians.

5. Discuss the cultural themes of parent-child/family conflict, dating & marriage and gender role expression in South Asian communities.
